Why troubleshoot with multi-channel measurements?
We frequently receive inquiries describing resonance vibrations which lead to loud noise emissions during operation. Less (audibly) perceptible resonance vibrations often have destructive effects on machinery after many operating hours, manifesting in breaking cardan shafts or increasing imbalance. Construction and material quality is often questionable in these cases. Production downtimes, damage to peripheral equipment in the affected section or even personal injury may be among the dramatic consequences.
Approach
In most cases of problematic vibration development, it is most advisable and effective to perform analysis and diagnosis on running machines (on-site measurement) or while driving the affected vehicle (mobile measurement).
Identifying the source of unwanted vibrations is usually not complicated – in most cases it is the motor itself. However, to determine which areas are affected by the vibrations and the exact kind of damage caused, it is often necessary to use multiple sensors and a multi-channel measurement system. Each individual project requires different standards of preparing and performing the measurement processes. This especially includes the extent of measuring points, measurement duration and the appropriate sensor technology to collect various readings. Besides sensors for the absorption of vibrations, additional sensors to collect temperatures, speed and possible torsional forces may be employed.
Project process
Off-Highway Powertrain Services uses a complex measurement software for these kinds of tasks, supported by peripheral measurements consisting of wiring, sensors and an individually configured special computer.
All procedures and following analyses of the collected data will be performed by our Competence Centre. To determine the ideal measuring spot, experience as well as a previous check of the test object are crucial factors. Single measurements are conducted to evaluate vibrations in regard to their quality. After identifying the necessary numbers of measuring points, the next step is to assess the appropriate measuring process for this project. After installing the vibration sensors and sensors for other parameters at the predefined locations, the readings are all simultaneously taken and then recorded. It is important to run through all relevant operational states to capture all possible vibration dynamics on a synchronized timeline. Extended measurements are necessary if variable production conditions occur, i.e., the production of paper with varying thickness in a paper factory or the use of vehicles in different environments and with variable loads. Only covering all operational states ensures the highest reliability for the subsequent analysis.
Solving the problem
Our expertise and experience enable our specialists to identify misaligned components or other construction defects relevant to the respective system setup. After the measurement process, we usually analyse the recorded data in our own lab. The technician’s subjective experience on-site plays an important role when it comes to locating sources of noise in certain rpm ranges. Combined with the synchronized recordings from the measurement protocol, we will work out an approach under consideration of the resonance vibrations developments, transgression of predefined standards, continuous overloads or identification of destructive peak loads.
With the support of our installation and construction engineers and based on the findings, we can make sound suggestions for improvement and if desired, we will also implement them on-site.
Results
Especially when damage must be avoided but also when there is a specific need for comfort and quiet running of vehicles of any kind, it is crucial to achieve a balanced vibration behaviour. Vibration diagnostics also ensure a higher operational reliability as well as hazard avoidance in production facilities. Vibration diagnosis leads to lasting comfort, safety and reliability. Off-Highway Powertrain Services provides not only professional equipment but also highly qualified and certified experts to achieve these goals and fulfil the high expectations of our customers.
